26th July

Took a drive in our rent a bomb old Corolla – to Daintree, partly to check out the dog friendly Riverview caravan park. Only 100 or so km. (and have NextG). I, being the driver, have decided that the road from the Daintree River to Cape tribulation is likely to be too much like hard work in the bus – skinny windy road hanging onto the slope with lanes closed along the edge… And Cape Tribulation is where the bitumen ends , so we are only 35 km short of that.

Daintree is a delightful, literal end of the road (the ferry north is about 15km before Daintree the town). Will book today for several days from next Tuesday when we leave here. There are river cruises from several places along the river. Counted 4 between the ferry and the town. One leaves from next to the car van park so that sounds like fun. Grabbed tour brochures. A half day tour to Cape Tribulation starts at $65 pp!!!!

After a good coffee at Daintree, we headed back; detouring 4 km to check the ferry crossing ($22 round trip for private vehicle – no weight limit apparently, but a 25 seat bus as ours was, is $75) Back through Mossman to Wonga Beach, not bad. All the usual warning signs about crocodiles and stingers… Then to Newell Beach which has the only other dog friendly caravan park or camp north of where we are… Pretty ordinary park and beach and nothing much of interest… will give it a miss.

Next stop Port Douglas. Found the old church Maz remembers – St Mary's by the Sea – beautiful small old timber church, Went up to the lookout which is several hundred feet above the beach. Quite a view to the south east down the main beach. I will send photos when I figure out how to shrink them easily on this Mac – must be a way, but Outlook Mac doest offer it? Grabbed a takeaway lunch and drove around, but Port Douglas didn't do much for us. Not at all dog friendly banned even on some streets!!!

Continued home, exploring a bit, but got lost and ended up in the parents pick queue at Freshwater Christian school – just up the road. About 250km for the day. Still full from lunch so settled in for a little bit of work for me and Maz reading her new op shop book – in the delightful warmth…

Started to drizzle late in the evening and rained all night. Consequently the minimum temp overnight 17!!!
