Our towed car is a 1994 Suzuki Vitara Soft-top.
Suzuki actually include instructions on flat towing (with an A-frame) in the owners manual: transfer case in neutral, freewheel hubs in 'free' and, of course, the steering unlocked - key in ACC position.

The A-frame is a Hitch'n'Go made in Yepoon QLD and is a neat and simple device with an 'override' 50mm standard ball hitch on two solid arms which fold together when not installed. The hard bit is fitting the vehicle specific, engineered, mounts to the car. Had to remove the bull-bar to get them on; then modify the bull-bar mounts to get it back on...
The A-frame attaches to the car with two 1/2" pins and two serious safety cables to the bus tow bar. The override hitch pulls on a bowden cable which is connected to the car's brake pedal - and needing careful adjustment.
And of course the car electrics must be 'tapped' to provide stop/tail and indicators. Amazingly some state rules require the car reversing lights to work with the towing vehicle - and one cannot reverse an a-frame towed car as the steering castor - which allows the car to follow behind - will flick the front wheels to one side or the other in reverse... a stupid rule.
Anyway we now have a TOAD... or TOWED car!
October 2012
After blowing up the original engine between Kunnunurra and Wyndam WA and towing the 'trailer' to Perth...we now have a newer version engine from a Balena, and have since added extractors - since there are no used and uncracked manifolds in this universe !!!
The car has been towed for a total of 22,000 km so far (July 2014)
September 2014
The Vitara has now been towed 30,000 km!!! We suspected wheel rearing problem in QLD... but by the time we got home all front wheel bearings absolutely needed replacing. And lower left drive boot too. CV is okay and everything else is fine.
Perhaps the side thrust from A-Frame towing does take its toll?
