17th- 18th August: AM at Freshwater Point

Yesterday, Sunday morning it was easy to get out of Mackay, with full fuel.

Start of the Hay Point coal terminal
We skipped the MK southern McEwans Beach an ambled down to Hay Point. Did not expect a massive coal loading port. Two electrified rail lines with constant trains, I guess from Clermont. Even so, apparently can not keep up as we counted over 30 ships waiting offshore!!!
On the south side of the point are a couple of relatively salubrious 'suburbs' - Half Tide and Salonika Beaches. Drove around - moved on...
Half Tide Beach

Grasstree Beach

Honey's Grasstree playground

Next excursion, Grasstree Beach, which is beautiful - the town and the beach.
It is on an estuary, and around the other side is Campwin, where we had a great view of Grasstree and the waiting ships to the north. Neither place has any provision for caravans, motorhomes or camping, just a motel or two each.

Next Armstrong Beach, not bad, but no vacancy at the small Caravan Park. While we were dawdling around town we were flagged down by a woman on a bike, who asked if we were looking for somewhere to camp... maybe... well take the next left the right then right through Freshwater to the boat ramp. And so we did.

Freshwater Point near dawn

It is relatively new (is not on Apple Maps - typically) and Mackay Regional Council has not yet put up their ubiquitous 'No Camping' signs.

At the ramp were half a dozen parked trailers and a few people fishing from the shore. Looks okay, we will stay.

Eventually all the boats returned and the trailers left, although there was the odd looker through the night - one circuit of the parking area.

The peaceful dawn tho was beautiful. After breakfast, it's  off.
