2nd Sept - Mt Isa

Up and at em. We are off to Mount Isa - only 125KM... But even tho it's Sunday (and QLD is closed) there should be something to see and do. Coming into Isa from the east the mine dominates the landscape. Looks like a montain being demolished and rebuilt. Interestingly, there is no mount Isa, hence it is spelled Mount not Mt... so we read... Anyway it is simply The Isa...

Checked in the newly renamed Discovery CP - 2/3 of which is accomodation for mine workers...
It's pretty good, off the higways and quiet with a pool!

Once set up, and with the what-to-do-in Mount Isa booklet we are off exploring the Info centre has an all about ISA display and is next door to the Riversleigh Fossil Centre - which is likely to be more interesting than more mining history! The underground hospital and museum sounds interesting. But we are not up for the several hours of underground tour! (or the money).

However once out exploring we are looking for a coffee and maybe brunch. Only Maccas is open... probably KFC and Subway, but McCafe Coffee is always 'acceptable'. Eventually we find the underground hospital - at 1:50PM and discover it closes at 2 - except today where they have lost interest early and gone. Not to worry found Bunnings which IS open and bought some BBQ wipes and spare drill bits. And BCF is open so finally found the springs for the awning guy lines/traces/stays...

Next the Isa Info place. and Senoirs price for the Riversleigh Fossils. What an amazing place it must be. fantastic finds from 120 Million to 30,000 years ago. They also have some dioramas of life-size models of some of the Gondwannaland animals (and later) Great.

Next the CP to collect Honey and off to the Isa water supply, Lake Moondarra, another brilliant oasis in the desolate (from our perspective) dry plains and hills....

Back to the pool, freezing, wonderful for a minute or two, now need to warm up...
Tomorrow Camooweal.
