7 Mar 17 - Blind Bight to Philip Island

Yesterday was entertaining. Lots of dog walkers, a young distance runner doing a lap of the carpark every 15 minutes, a pair of local wind-surfers sped around in the stiff breeze, and a few locals drove around to check us out... til about 11pm...

Sunrise through the windscreen, tide is back in, quite pretty - and the dog walkers are out already. After a cuppa we are mobile again. We sort of expect to get to Philip Island about midday, via the various coastal villages.

First detour is into KooWeeRup looking for a news agent and a toilet... then through Tooradin to the first bit of waterside at Jam Jerrup just past Lang Lang. Not much to see but nice views across the bay to Bling Bight!

Next diversion was into Pioneer Bay, a bit more welcoming place. Then Grantville with a good turning and parking spot right by the pier. No prohibition signs anywhere and a clean toilet! Pretty views too.

Grantville Pier

The next, bit more serious detour is to Corinella and, in fact to Settlement Point, the extremity that pokes way out into Westernport Bay. Great 270 degree views.
West from Settlement Point

On down the road and over the San Remo bridge onto Philip Island and along to the Info Centre. Equiped with maps and booklets we head up to Cowes, looking for a CP with beachfront. (Strictly no free camps on public land on this island). We have ended up at Cowes Caravan Park for two nights, The CMCA discounted price of $38pn is not bad.

Getting ready for a drive around in the Suzuki my iphone blew up! It was apparent they the battery had gassed up and pushed the screen out - intact. I figured it was i7 time but managed to get a battery from the Cowes Battery Shop and had it replaced at the Cowes Computer Shop... yep, $80 later back in business (although with a bit of dust between the screen and display.

Maz has not had a close encounter with a Penguin, so we will give it a go. When I came to the Penguin Parade as a child, we found a spot on the dunes and waited for the returning Fairy Penguins. They would waddle around or over you or give you a peck to get out of their way. Now it is $25 to be gathered on a walkway and watch the Little Penguins go past in the concrete chutes, to the burrows, apparently... But there are other places to observe the birds. Tomorrow it is off to the Nobbies.

But meanwhile its time for a nice beer, a walk on the beach and grilled salmon and salad for dinner...
